HISTORICAL NOTES
The "first" School of Architecure library of the Turin Politecnico, established in 1958, held about a thousand books and journals. Prof. Roberto Gabetti was the library director until 1986, when the Library system was born. The library occupied two rooms at the third floor of the nord-west tower of the Valentino castle.
In 1968, the first "General catalogue of books and periodicals" was published: the periodicals were 150, the books 6000.
In 1971 the library moved to the two long saloons next to the Botanic garden. The superior hall collected books and journals; in the low ground hall was established the Cartographic section, the Theses section, the Piemonte section. The last section collected all the monographs about the cultural, artistic, architectural and urban history of our region.
In 1973 the library acquired some archival materials, among them the professional archive of Carlo Mollino.
In 1982 a new relocation moved the library in the ex -aeronautical laboratories (south courtyard), where it still has its office.
During those years, the director Roberto Gabetti, at one opening of the academic year, said:"the connection between philosophy and technology is fundamental for the architect's education … and, as the schools of architecture have a recent history, and their reorganization go back to even more recent decades, the italian architecure libraries lack of collections of historical relevance: therefore we need, to join to the acquisition of the up to date materials, a deep analysis of the antique catalogues in order to reform from the beginning all the bibliographic references we need to support the existing researches…"
So, the architecture library is a rich library, able to keep a link with the past, acquiring antique texts and, at the same time, linked to the present with the constant acquisition of up to date materials.
At the present the Library acquires around 3000 new volumes per year.
A library historical profile was delineated on the occasion of the exhibition promoted by the prof. Elena Tamagno, who was the Architecture central library manager, to show the collection "Luca Beltrami", acquired by the library. For the historical profile see: Politecnico di Torino … Castello del Valentino, 7 luglio 1988.
